In the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s first roadside safety checks in unincorporated Antioch, Lincolnshire and Beach Park in about 10 years, deputies combined to arrest or ticket more than 80 people.

In Beach Park on Sept. 27, officers tallied 44 citations or arrests, including two DUIs, and single arrests for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The majority of the citations, 21, were for driver’s license offenses. There were 12 insurance violations and four vehicle code violations.

At the Sept. 19 checkpoint on Milwaukee Avenue and Aptakisic Road near Lincolnshire, police arrested or ticketed 22 people, including one DUI, one possession of marijuana and one possession of drug paraphernalia. There were nine driver’s license violations, six insurance offenses, and two license plate registration offenses.

The Sept. 5 checkpoint at Grass Lake Road and Route 59 near Antioch produced 19 citations or arrests. There were no DUI’s, but two people were arrested for possession of marijuana and four were arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. Citations were given to eight people for not having insurance and three were cited for equipment violations or expired registration.

Sheriff Mark Curran said the deputies working the enforcement zone were looking for drivers operating vehicles in an unsafe manner. Those driving on a suspended or revoked driver’s license were also a priority.

The roadside safety check is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Administration. The grant is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.
